Now that we all have our shiny new consoles, weather that's your Wii U, PS4 or XBox One. Let us bid farewell to the last generation of gaming. To them I say,
"Good Riddance!"
OK, so the last generation wasn't all bad, but if you go through my console collection, you'll notice that I have an NES, PS1, GameCube & Wii U. I don't have anything before the NES but afterwards I am missing two generations. The SNES/Genesis generation, which I mostly am missing due to money, and the last generation. Which, honestly, is only because I sold my PS3 so I could afford a Wii U. What did I dislike about that generation though? I'd never sell any of my other consoles to buy a new one. Well, first of all, what was good about it, graphics. That's about it. The last generation had the largest graphical leap since the N64.
However, I hated all the controllers. Mostly the PS3 controller but I found none of them to be really good controllers. The PS3 is what I have the most experience with and it's controller was an absolute gaming abomination. The lack of anywhere to rest your fingers made it extremely uncomfortable to use and the triggers round-ness resulted in my finger slipping off. The Wii controller, while great for motion control, and if used right is amazing and every bit as revolutionary as the Wii's code-name suggested, isn't that great. Most people (other than Nintendo) didn't know how to fully realize this controller and it showed, honestly the best Wii games don't use motion control. Then the XBox 360 controller, which I know I'm going to get some hate for saying this, but I didn't really care for it too much either. It was the best out of the three for sure, but being the shiny-est turd isn't something to strive for. The main problem is that the A & B buttons got mixed up and the start and select-esque buttons are weird, much like they were on the original XBox.
The next issue I had was that there really weren't that many memorable games. There were tons of fun and good games, but none that were memorable. Very few titles last gen. where new. Most of them where sequels, the GameCube/PS2/XB generation was really the last one to have new titles, since it once again gave developers something new to screw around with. Sure there was the odd title, Motorstorm for instance. But almost everything was part of a series that was already well established or most new games were just "Eh."
The last thing is that most of the games where just silly. I mean I know there was more than FPS's, which I don't care for, but the majority of the PS3 & XBox 360's titles were either war, FPS or M-rated. Which is a turn off for me and probably why my PS3 collection was so tiny.
I realize that the last generation really brought in the most people to gaming since the NES generation, but it was just so "so-so" with really nothing new (except the Wii, which quickly lost it's quirky-ness) and the lack of memorable games meant that my PS3 was a DVD player that I might occasionally use to play DRIVER : San Fran or a round of Motorstorm. I don't know how many people agree with me, but I hope that SONY, Microsoft & Nintendo have learnt their lessons from what was the most successful failure of all time.

PS I am looking for more writers to speculate and commentate on the gaming world alongside me. If you are interested, let me know!
